Best for The cheapest way to get a genuine ten-inch slot and a window

Watch out for The middle of the dial lands light, and the carriage has been known to fling toast onto the counter

Independently measured. Source: America's Test Kitchen, toaster review.

At 10.5 inches this is the longest measured slot in the dataset, and it is attached to the cheapest machine in it. The window does the same job as the glass walls on the Magimix at a small fraction of the outlay, and the element is quartz, which is unusual at this price.

Depth is 5 inches, which is the working minimum. A tall slice off a large round loaf will just about clear it; anything taller leaves a pale band. Width was not published.

Two habits to learn. The dial reads light through the middle of its range, so the setting you want is higher than the number suggests, and at the top of the range it produces genuinely dark toast rather than burnt. And the carriage can eject with real enthusiasm, which is charming exactly once.

The body is only 5 inches deep, the smallest counter footprint of anything here, which matters because long slot toasters are otherwise the most counter-hungry appliance in the category.

What this slot takes

Judged on length alone, against the slot figure on record. Width and depth decide whether a thick or tall slice clears, and where those are blank we cannot answer for them.

  • Sandwich slice4.5″ Fits A standard supermarket slice, laid flat.
  • Two slices, side by side9.5″ Fits The reason the shape exists. Needs about 10 inches with room to load.
  • Bagel half4.5″ Fits Length is easy. Bagels fail on width, not length.
  • Sourdough round slice8″ Fits A slice off a large boule, cut across the widest point.
  • Bakery batard slice10.5″ Only just The slice that defeats almost everything on the market.
